Jaipur

This city  is known as the pink city because the most prominent buildings here are colored a beautiful pink. It was built in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh. It’s a labyrinth of opulent palaces, historic sights and fascinating bazaars which have a wide variety of goods for sale ranging from jewellery to house hold items with the distinct Jaipuri touch to them.

The old walled area has an astronomical observatory and the city palace. The Badi Chaupar (Large Square) built in the 18th century has not changed a bit and is a hub for silver jeweler, puppets and local handicrafts. It houses the famous Hawa Mahal the Johari Bazaar and the Jantar Mantar.

Some of the must visit places in this bustling and beautiful city are.

City Palace, Albert hall, Jantar Mantar, Statue Circle, Moti Dungri, Hawa Mahal,Gaitor, Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh Fort and Amber Fort.

The city palace is bang in the center of this beautiful city and houses the city palace museum, which is open to the public it has a treasure trove of manuscripts, miniature paintings, musical instruments, royal costumes, weaponry and mogul carpets in a wide variety, it show cases the princely past of Jaipur. The amazing collections of weapons which are showcased are pistols, guns, small cannons, chain armours, ivory and jeweled swords, daggers and poisoned blades.

According to the Guinness Book of Records the biggest silver objects in the world are in this museum, these are two gigantic silver vessels which were meant for transporting water from the river Ganges for drinking purposes of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh the second, when ever he traveled to England because it was his belief that he might get polluted by drinking the polluted English waters.

Albert hall was built in 1887ad by Sir Swinton Jacob a renowned British architect. It is a combination of north Indian and British architecture and has an amazing collection of ivory, carpets, paintings, crystal pieces and metal and stone sculptures. There is a fabulous garden all around Albert hall, beautifully laid out flower beds and flourishing lawns intermingled with fountains and pools. 

Jantar Mantar is one of the five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh and is the largest and the best preserved of the lot, the other four are in Delhi, Mathura, Varanasi and Ujjain. There is a complete collection of astronomical instruments made out of stone and metal which helped the king in his passion for numerology and astronomy; these instruments provide accurate and up-to-date information even today.

Statue circle is a magnificent traffic roundabout with a statue of Sawai Jai Singh holding astrological diagrams; it is a fit memorial for this great man. This circle is also the hanging out joint in the evening with a wide variety of mobile eateries. The fountains and the lighting give the circle an air of cheerfulness.

Moti Dungri literal translation means Pearl Hill; it is situated on a small hill in middle of Jaipur and is a copy of a Scottish castle this exotic palace was once the home of Maharaja Madho Singh’s elder son and it has been the home of Rajmata Gaytri Devi as well and it still remains a private property of the Maharajas family. The auspicious Ganesh temple is also here.

Hawa Mahal was built by Sawai Pratap Singh for the ladies of the royal blood to watch the day to day life of Jaipur sitting in the comfort of Purdha (veil). It is located in the heart of the bazaar and is the most prominent landmark of Jaipur; it is five stories high and with pink honeycombed sandstone windows also known as Jharokhas and is a stunning example of Rajasthan architecture. It is also known as the palace of the winds.
 
Gaitor is an enclosed walled garden just of the Amber road and contains the cenotaphs of the Kachhawaha kings. Ornate carved pillars give support to the marble chhatris which were erected over the place the maharajas were cremated. The most impressive cenotaph in the complex is of Sawai Jai Singh who was also the Maharaja who chose this cremation site, there are mythological and religious scenes carved on the pillars which were then topped by white marble.

Jaigarh Fort is also known as the victory fort and is situated on a hill top overlooking Jaipur. One of the few surviving cannon foundries is located here, it’s a military fort which also contains the world’s largest cannon on wheels, which was cast in 1726 and is known as Jai Van. There is an exquisite collection of cannons which were used by Raja Man Singh during Mogul campaigns. The Dungar Darwaza is the main gate and the view from here is seen to be believed. Diva Bruj is a seven storey tower where a huge oil lamp is lit on the king’s birthday; this fort was the royal treasury as well.

Nahargarh Fort is also known as the Tiger Fort. This area was ruled be Meena tribe until they were defeated by the Kachhawahas, alongside the Aravali hills it was built in 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh, Sawai Madho Singh added a lavish palace called Madhavendra Bhavan for his Queens, it is laid in a maze of terraces and courtyards the walls and pillars have a amazing form of Arayish, it is a form of plaster work which is hand polished with agate to produce a marble finish, it was built in 1886. The fort overlooks the city of Jaipur and looks amazing in the night as it is floodlit in warm amber light.

Amber Fort established by Sawai Man Singh 1 on the remains of a small structure which was with the Meena tribes. The main construction was done by Sawai Jai Singh 1, like the Sheesh Mahal, Ganesh Pol and the Shila Devi Temple. The entrance to the Amber fort is through the Suraj Pol (sun gate) the gate leads into a huge courtyard known as Jaleb Chowk which has a wide variety of shops, a flight of steps lead to the Shila Devi Temple which has a stone image of goddess Kali and is revered by the royal bloodline, it has silver doors which are carved with huge oil lamps and pillars carved to look like banana trees. In the next courtyard is the place for public audience known as Diwan-i-Aam, near by is Sattais Katcheri where scribes used to record revenue petitions. The Ganesh Pol is the entrance to the three palaces each having three mogul style gardens Aram Bagh, Kesar Kyari Bagh and Dilaram Bagh. The fabulous Sheesh Mahal is adjoining as the name suggests tiny mirrors are embedded in this chamber and they reflect the light of even a single candle transforming the entire palace into a cradle of stars.

There are fairs and festivals which are held every year

Elephant festival is an annual event held in Jaipur on the 14th of March it is held at Chaugan Stadium. There is a ceremonial procession which is recreated with the help of chariots, cannons, camel’s, lancers and caparisoned elephants, the elephants are groomed with Mahouts decorating the elephants by painting there foreheads, trunks and feet with motifs, then they are adorned from tail to tusk in glittering ornaments and embroidered velvets and small trinkets, female elephants wear anklets which tinkle when they walk.

The elephants take part in the regal game of polo as well as running races and even taking part in a beauty pageant, there are fierce and deadly elephant fights as well. It is celebrated before the Indian festivals of colors Holi 

The Gangaur festival is celebrated from 11th to 12th April and is a colorful and important festival of Rajasthan, it is a celebration of harvest season, marriage vows and the monsoons, the festival starts on the Chaitra which comes after Holi and is celebrated for 18 days. Gan symbolizes lord Shiva and Gaur stands for his wife Gauri and it symbolizes marital bliss.
